By now just about all human activities have been documented in detail, so it is quite surprising to find that in the past very little interest has been shown in such important, basic activities as washing and (at least in the twentieth century) personal hygiene. This book fills in the gap, giving us the first, richly illustrated, story of the evolution and changes in the concept of cleanliness through the centuries.
